Gary Lange’s Rainbow
Gary Lange’s Rainbow (Melanotaenia garylangei) is a recently described species named for Gary Lange — one of the most respected rainbowfish enthusiasts, collectors, and conservation advocates in the hobby. Males display a beautiful combination of blue-grey on the upper body with vivid orange-red on the lower body and fins, creating a warm, jewel-like appearance. Carrying this fish is a meaningful tribute to the man who has done more to advance rainbowfish conservation and hobbyist knowledge than almost anyone.
Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms to develop the vibrant male coloration. Crush flakes for juveniles; soak pellets.
Native to river systems in New Guinea. A relatively newly described species that is still building its presence in the hobby. Adaptable to a range of soft to medium, slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with good filtration.
Keep in groups of at least six with mixed sexes. Males display actively with impressive fin-spreading and color intensification. Completely peaceful with other medium to large community fish.
A well-planted aquarium with open swimming space in the center replicates the rainbowfish's natural riverine habitat. These are active, fast-swimming fish that appreciate length more than height — a longer tank allows them to build up speed and display properly. Good filtration and regular partial water changes are important, as rainbowfish are sensitive to deteriorating water quality. Avoid very small or slow-moving tankmates that may be outcompeted at feeding time.
