Crimson Spotted Rainbow
Crimson Spotted Rainbow (Melanotaenia duboulayi) is one of Australia's most attractive and widely distributed rainbowfish. Males display a warm pink to rose-red body with iridescent blue-silver scaling along the flanks and vivid red-orange fin coloration — the 'crimson spots' visible on the scales giving the species its name. A robust, active fish that is excellent for larger community aquariums.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets make an excellent daily staple — soak and crush for juveniles. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
Native to southeastern Queensland and northern New South Wales, Australia — one of the most widespread Australian rainbowfish. Inhabits a wide variety of freshwater habitats from clear coastal streams to inland rivers. This adaptability makes it one of the most forgiving rainbowfish in terms of water chemistry.
Keep in groups of at least six with mixed sexes. Males display actively. Completely peaceful with other medium to large community fish. One of the more cold-tolerant rainbowfish — a useful trait for temperate setups.
A well-planted aquarium with open swimming space in the center replicates the rainbowfish's natural riverine habitat. These are active, fast-swimming fish that appreciate length more than height — a longer tank allows them to build up speed and display properly. Good filtration and regular partial water changes are important, as rainbowfish are sensitive to deteriorating water quality. Avoid very small or slow-moving tankmates that may be outcompeted at feeding time.
