Banded Rainbow
Banded Rainbow (Melanotaenia trifasciata) is one of Australia's most spectacular and variable rainbowfish. The common name refers to the bold dark banding visible along the flanks in many populations. Coloration varies dramatically between river localities — from deep red and orange to blue-green and yellow — making this one of the most diverse species in the genus. The species name trifasciata means 'three-banded.'
Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms. Crush flakes for juveniles; soak pellets. Feed 2–3 times daily.
Native to rivers and streams across northern Australia — from Arnhem Land through Queensland — this species inhabits clear, well-oxygenated flowing water over rocky or sandy substrate. It is one of the hardier Australian rainbowfish and adapts well to a range of aquarium conditions.
Keep in groups of at least six with mixed sexes. Males display actively with impressive coloration and fin displays. As with the Goyder River form, different locality populations should be kept separately to maintain locality integrity. Completely peaceful with other medium to large community fish.
A well-planted aquarium with open swimming space in the center replicates the rainbowfish's natural riverine habitat. These are active, fast-swimming fish that appreciate length more than height — a longer tank allows them to build up speed and display properly. Good filtration and regular partial water changes are important, as rainbowfish are sensitive to deteriorating water quality. Avoid very small or slow-moving tankmates that may be outcompeted at feeding time.
