Description

King Koopa Nerite Snail

King Koopa Nerite Snail (Neritina juttingae) is one of the most visually distinctive snails available for freshwater aquariums — named for the blunt, rounded "horns" covering its shell, which bear an unmistakable resemblance to a certain video game villain's spiked shell. Native to brackish estuaries and freshwater rivers across Southeast Asia (Borneo, Sumatra, Thailand, and Malaysia), this snail is notably uncommon in the hobby compared to the more widely available Zebra or Horned Nerite, making it a genuine find for anyone who has already worked through the standard nerite lineup.

Feeding & Care Tip: The King Koopa is a grazing algae eater and biofilm scavenger that does best in a mature, established aquarium where algae and biofilm have developed naturally on glass, hardscape, and slow-growing plant leaves. It is an exceptional eater of both nuisance algae and cyanobacteria — the latter being something almost nothing else in the hobby will reliably touch. In a well-established tank, no supplemental feeding is necessary. In a newer or very clean aquarium, offer blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach, lettuce) or high-quality sinking algae wafers a few times per week. Always remove uneaten vegetable matter after a day to avoid fouling the water.

⚠ Shell Health — Calcium Matters: Nerite snails in acidic or very soft water are prone to shell erosion — the shell thins, pits, and loses its distinctive horns over time. Keep pH above 7.0 and ensure adequate water hardness. If running RO or very soft water, add a Glasgarten Mineral Junkie or equivalent calcium supplement regularly to protect the shell quality.

⚠ Copper Warning: Copper is fatal to all snails and invertebrates — even trace amounts. Never use copper-based medications in any aquarium housing snails. Check all fish medications carefully before use.

Like all nerites, the King Koopa will lay small, white, sesame-seed-like eggs on hard surfaces throughout the aquarium — glass, rocks, driftwood, filter intakes. These eggs are completely harmless but can be visually noticeable and are difficult to remove. More importantly: the eggs will never hatch in freshwater. Larvae require brackish or marine water to survive, so this snail will not reproduce or overpopulate your aquarium — a significant advantage over many other snail species.

Completely peaceful and plant-safe, the King Koopa is safe with virtually all small community fish, dwarf shrimp, and other snails. Avoid housing with known snail predators such as pufferfish, loaches, and large cichlids. A tight-fitting lid is recommended — nerite snails are surprisingly capable climbers and will explore above the waterline if given the opportunity.

Care & Ideal Parameters

Recommended Stocking 1 per 5–10 gallons; do not overstock
Ideal Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C)
Ideal pH 7.0–8.0 — alkaline preferred; below 7.0 causes shell erosion
Ideal GH 8–15 dGH — adequate hardness essential for shell health
Lighting Low to moderate — algae growth on surfaces more important than brightness
Primary Food Algae and biofilm — natural grazing; needs no feeding in mature tanks
Supplemental Food Blanched zucchini, spinach, lettuce; algae wafers (in newer tanks only)
Lifespan 3–6 years with stable water parameters
Origin Southeast Asia — Borneo, Sumatra, Thailand, Malaysia; estuaries and freshwater rivers
Notes Copper: Fatal — never use in invertebrate tanks
Eggs: Will lay white eggs on hard surfaces — harmless, will not hatch in freshwater
Shell erosion: Caused by acidic or soft water — maintain pH above 7.0 and supplement calcium
Climbing: Capable of leaving the water — secure lid recommended
Plant safe: Will not eat healthy live plants
