Rhaphidophora Versteegii

Rhaphidophora Versteegii was formerly classified and traded as "Piper Clypeatum" before taxonomic revision placed it in the genus Rhaphidophora, an aroid climbing vine genus closely related to Monstera and Epipremnum rather than to the true peppers. It's still frequently found under its older Piper-associated trade name even though it botanically belongs to the Araceae family, not Piperaceae.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: Treat this as a climbing aroid, not a Piper — give it a moss pole or bark slab to climb, much as you would a Monstera or Rhaphidophora relative.

Give it bright, indirect light, a well-draining aroid mix, and consistent warmth and humidity typical of Southeast Asian and New Guinean climbing aroids. Like its Rhaphidophora relatives, it roots along the stem given a suitable support to climb.

A good example of how trade names can outlive taxonomic reclassification — this plant's old "Piper" association is a holdover from before botanists moved it to its true home in Rhaphidophora.
