Description
Podolasia Stipitata
Podolasia Stipitata was described by N.E. Brown and is the only known species in its genus — Podolasia is monotypic, native to Borneo, Sumatra, and Peninsular Malaysia. It shares vegetative traits with the spiny genus Lasia and floral features with Cyrtosperma (the giant swamp taro relatives), with leathery leaves ranging from hastate to sagittate (arrow-shaped) and an inflorescence that opens white before gradually turning purple from the top down as the male flowers mature.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This species belongs to a swamp-adjacent aroid lineage related to Cyrtosperma — keep the substrate consistently moist to wet rather than letting it dry out between waterings.
Give it bright, filtered light, a rich, humus-heavy substrate kept consistently moist to wet, and warm, humid conditions reflecting its Bornean and Sumatran lowland habitat. As the sole species representing its entire genus, expect real botanical rarity behind this plant's otherwise unassuming arrow-shaped foliage.
A genuine taxonomic one-of-a-kind — a monotypic genus is a real rarity in the plant world, and this species' documented seed material has even been featured in botanical seed collections cataloguing the flora of the Heart of Borneo.
