Description
Piptosphata sp. Kudangan
Piptosphata sp. Kudangan belongs to Piptospatha, a genus of rheophytic aroids closely related to Ooia and Aridarum within the Bornean stream-aroid group (Schismatoglottideae). Following a 2010 taxonomic revision by Wong and Boyce, Piptospatha in the strict sense now refers only to the "Elongata Group," a more narrowly defined set of species than the genus once included, with several former Piptospatha species reassigned to the newly described Ooia.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: As with its Ooia and Aridarum relatives, this species wants constant moisture and strong water movement — a paludarium or bog-style setup with running or frequently changed water works best.
Give it deep shade to low, filtered light, a mineral, fast-draining substrate kept constantly wet, and warm, stable temperatures. As with all locality-named sp. finds within this rheophyte group, exact appearance and mature growth habit will vary — the photo shows a mature reference specimen — your bare-root plant will typically be smaller.
Bornean stream-aroid taxonomy remains genuinely active, with genera like Piptospatha, Ooia, and Aridarum still being reworked as botanists continue fieldwork across the island's rivers and waterfalls.
