Piper Ornatum, commonly called the Celebes Pepper, was described by N.E. Brown and is endemic to Sulawesi (formerly Celebes), Indonesia. It's a climbing vine with glossy, heart-shaped leaves in olive green, mottled with silvery-pink markings that trace the veins, and a pale green underside — a genuine ornamental relative of the black pepper plant.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This species is frequently confused in the trade with the similar-looking, deep-maroon-backed Piper crocatum from South America — true Piper ornatum has a pale green leaf underside, distinct from crocatum's purple-maroon.
Give it bright, filtered light — an east or west window works well — consistent warmth (it dislikes fluctuating temperatures and dry air), and let the top of the mix dry slightly between waterings. You may notice small white or black crystal-like specks on the leaves and stems; these are natural cystoliths, calcium oxalate deposits the plant secretes, and are not pests or damage.
A genuine Indonesian ornamental pepper species, rarely commercially available and sought after specifically for its mottled, silvery-pink foliage — a real collector's vine for those willing to meet its steady-conditions requirements.
