Description
Phyllagathis Guttata
Phyllagathis Guttata belongs to Phyllagathis, a genus in the melastome family (Melastomataceae) native to India, southern China, Southeast Asia, and the wider Malesian region. Its species name — "spotted" in Latin — describes the patterned markings across its foliage, a family trait shared with well-known melastome relatives like Sonerila and Blastus, both prized for similarly textured, often spotted leaves.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Treat as you would most terrarium-style melastomes — low to medium filtered light, high humidity, and consistently moist (never soggy) substrate.
Give it low to medium filtered light, a loamy, humus-rich substrate, and steady moisture in a terrarium-style setup. Melastomataceae leaves are recognizably distinct at a glance thanks to their prominent longitudinal veining, running either from the leaf base or in parallel pairs — a family trait visible across Phyllagathis and its many close relatives.
Phyllagathis taxonomy has been genuinely unsettled in recent years — molecular studies have shown the genus as historically defined is not a single natural group, with entire clades of species recently split out into the resurrected genus Perilimnastes. A good reminder that even "settled" plant names are sometimes anything but.
