Pandanus sp. Borneo belongs to Pandanus, commonly called screw pine or pandan, a genus of roughly 600 species of palm-like, dioecious trees and shrubs native across the Old World tropics — with the greatest diversity found in Madagascar and Malesia, including Borneo, where this specimen was collected. The genus name comes from "pandang," a Malay name for the plant, and its common name "screw pine" describes the spiraling, screw-like pattern its strap-shaped, spiny-edged leaves form around the stem.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Handle with care — Pandanus leaf margins and midribs are lined with small, sharp teeth that can scratch skin, a genuinely defining trait of the genus.
Give it bright, indirect light, well-draining soil, and water once the top inch or two has dried — avoid getting water directly on the leaves. As the plant matures it may develop the genus's signature aerial prop roots, thick supportive roots that emerge above the soil line to help anchor the plant, a genuinely striking structural feature as it ages.
Pandanus carries real cultural and economic weight across the Indo-Pacific — leaves are used for weaving, thatching, and cooking (as pandan flavoring), while various species stabilize coastal soil against erosion — a genus with substance well beyond its ornamental appeal.
