Iguanura Elegans belongs to Iguanura, a genus of small, attractive rainforest understory palms native to Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, that remains relatively little-known in cultivation. Considered one of the prettiest and rarest species in its genus, it has undivided, paddle-shaped, notched leaves with leaflets of varying widths, giving it a look reminiscent of the unrelated genus Geonoma — new leaves emerge with a striking red blush that gradually fades to green.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Watch new leaves for their brief red blush before it fades to green — a good, healthy sign that the plant is actively pushing new growth.
Give it warm, sheltered, consistently moist conditions with rich soil, mimicking the understory shade this species is accustomed to on the forest floor. It also makes a genuinely charming potted specimen for a humid conservatory or greenhouse setting, given a tropical climate and protection from wind and cold.
A genuine rarity even among dedicated palm collectors — Iguanura as a genus remains under-documented and under-grown, making a well-established specimen like this a real find.
