Description
Monstera Karstenianum
Monstera Karstenianum, commonly called Monstera Peru, is native to the tropical forests of Peru, where it grows as a climbing epiphyte beneath the rainforest canopy. Unlike most of its Monstera relatives, it never develops the classic fenestrated "Swiss cheese" holes — instead, it's grown for its small, thick, leathery leaves with a deeply ridged, almost reptilian texture and a rich, dark emerald color.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This species stores water in its thick, leathery leaves, so it tolerates lower light and occasional neglect better than almost any other Monstera — a great fit for a dimmer room or a less-experienced grower.
Give it bright, indirect light (it also does reasonably well farther from a window or in a north-facing spot), a well-draining aroid mix, and water only once the top few inches of soil are dry — its succulent-like leaves make it far more prone to overwatering issues than to drought stress. Provide a burlap or moss pole if you want it to climb, or simply let it trail from a shelf or hanging planter.
Widely considered one of the most forgiving Monstera species available — genus good looks without the more demanding light and humidity needs of its fenestrated relatives.
