Licuala Mapu, botanically Licuala mattanensis 'Mapu' and nicknamed the "Jedi Palm," is native to the rainforest understory of Sarawak and Kalimantan on Borneo, where it grows in deep shade beneath the forest canopy. It's prized above all for its naturally mottled, tessellated foliage — nearly circular, pleated, fan-shaped leaves up to 2 feet across, patterned with green and lighter green or yellow patches unlike almost anything else in the palm world.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: A slightly acidic, low-pH soil helps preserve this palm's signature mottled coloration — standard neutral potting mixes can cause the pattern to fade over time.
Give it part shade to filtered light (young plants especially need protection from direct sun), rich, well-draining, slightly acidic soil, and water often, letting excess drain freely rather than allowing the roots to sit wet. It's a genuinely slow grower — expect it to take months just to develop each new leaf — eventually reaching up to 9 feet with a slender trunk under ideal long-term conditions, though most specimens stay considerably more compact.
