Leucobryum (Cushion Moss)
Leucobryum, commonly called Cushion Moss, Pincushion Moss, or Pillow Moss, is a true bryophyte — a non-vascular, flowerless plant lineage dating back roughly 450 million years, long before flowering plants existed. Its genus name means "white moss" in Greek, describing the pale, silvery-green to bluish cast of its densely packed, tightly clumped leaves, which grow upright in soft, rounded, pillow-like mounds rather than spreading outward.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Soak the moss fully in water, then squeeze out the excess before placing it — this rehydrates the cushion without leaving it sitting in standing water, which can cause it to rot.
Give it bright, indirect light (a north-facing window works well), high humidity (70–90%), and regular misting rather than pouring water directly. Having no true roots, it absorbs water and nutrients through its leaves, so substrate matters less than atmospheric moisture — a peat, coconut coir, or moss-specific mix that retains dampness without staying waterlogged works well as a simple anchor point.
The classic terrarium moss for good reason — its compact, tearable cushions are easy to shape into any size or gap, never outgrow their space, and add instant lush texture to a closed terrarium, moss bowl, or vivarium setup.
