Leea Amabilis

Leea Amabilis was first published in 1882 by Veitch and Sons and is native to Borneo, an ornamental shrub with silvery-green patterned leaves on top and a reddish-purple underside. It belongs to Leea, a genus in the grape family (Vitaceae) that, unusually for that family, grows as non-climbing shrubs and small trees rather than climbing vines with tendrils.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: Give it bright but indirect light — in its native habitat it grows in the dappled shade of larger trees, so an east-facing window with diffused light suits it well.

Give it bright, indirect light, well-draining soil, regular watering, and high humidity. It grows upright on a sturdy stem, typically reaching 50–100 cm, and is considered a genuinely easy plant to care for once established.

A distinctive member of the grape family that doesn't look or grow anything like a grapevine — its silvery, patterned foliage makes for an eye-catching and genuinely uncommon addition to a collection.
