Description
Lecanopteris Sinuosa
Lecanopteris Sinuosa is native across a wide swath of Malesia, including Sulawesi, the Philippines, New Guinea, the Moluccas, Indochina, and Vanuatu, tolerating nearly any habitat within that range except true lowland rainforest. It's a genuine myrmecophyte — its swollen rhizome forms a mutualistic relationship with stingless ants (genera Crematogaster, Technomyrmex, or Iridomyrmex), which rear their larvae inside the rhizome in exchange for nutrients delivered through their waste.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Its wider natural range spanning both lowland and higher-elevation habitats makes this one of the more adaptable Lecanopteris — no ants required in cultivation, just consistent moisture and a diluted fertilizer.
Give it bright, indirect light, good airflow, and a chunky, well-draining, mounted or bark-based substrate. Beyond nutrition, the ant relationship is thought to offer this species increased protection from herbivory and improved spore dispersal — a genuinely multi-layered survival strategy.
One of the more widely distributed members of a genus otherwise known for narrow, localized endemism — a good ant-fern choice for collectors wanting a species with a bit more natural adaptability behind it.
