Description

Hydnophytum Formicarum

Hydnophytum Formicarum is the type species of Hydnophytum, the largest of five true "ant-plant" genera in the coffee family (Rubiaceae). Native to the Philippines and widespread across Southeast Asia, it's a genuinely epiphytic myrmecophyte — its swollen, tuberous stem is honeycombed with smooth-walled internal chambers and tunnels that provide a natural home for ant colonies high in the forest canopy, protecting them from weather and predators alike.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: Roots are notably brittle — handle with real care during repotting, since damaged roots are slow to recover on this genus.

Give it bright light with some protection from harsh midday sun, high humidity, and warm, stable temperatures. An open, orchid-style mix of sphagnum moss, chopped bark, and perlite works well, or mount it on cork bark for a naturalistic, epiphytic display given consistently high humidity. Water when the mix is just barely dry, since this species' epiphytic roots dislike sitting wet as much as they dislike drying out completely.

Of the roughly 108 Hydnophytum species published to date, only 33 are currently recognized as valid and a further 22 newly described — 11 known only from a single herbarium specimen — reflecting a genus that, much like New Guinea's flora generally, remains genuinely under-documented. No ants are needed for successful cultivation; the plant thrives without tenants.
