Description

Hoya Waymaniae

Hoya Waymaniae was formally described by Kloppenburg in 1995 from plants collected in the jungles of Sabah, on the island of Borneo. It's a vining epiphyte grown for its thick, succulent, rounded-to-oval leaves with a distinctive wavy, rippled margin — a texture that sets it apart from the smoother-leaved Hoya more commonly seen in cultivation.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: Leaf color is light-driven — dark green in lower light, shifting to a striking reddish-purple blush (with the veins staying green) under bright light. Let the potting mix dry out between waterings; this species dislikes staying wet.

Give it a well-draining, chunky orchid-style mix and bright indirect to full sun exposure to encourage the best foliage color and eventual flowering. It's an easy grower and root by cutting readily, tolerating a scrambling or trailing habit as it matures. Established plants can flower at a fairly young age, though not always frequently, and are known for producing unusually long flower peduncles — sometimes stretching close to a foot — that carry umbels of small, fragrant, curled-back yellow-orange flowers with a contrasting maroon or purple corona at the center.

As a Bornean endemic only described within the last three decades, Hoya Waymaniae has genuine collector appeal beyond its good looks — it represents the wave of Hoya taxonomy that has come out of Borneo and neighboring Sabah in recent decades, an ongoing area of botanical discovery for the genus.
