Description

Hoya sp. Red Borneo

Hoya sp. Red Borneo is an as-yet unidentified Hoya collected from Borneo and grown in the trade under this locality name, prized for the deep red and burgundy coloration that develops in its foliage. Young plants like this one show elongated, lance-shaped succulent leaves radiating from a short central stem, with color ranging from wine-red and burgundy through olive-bronze, each leaf marked by a pale yellow-green midrib and fine venation running its length.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: Red coloration in this Hoya intensifies with brighter light and fades toward green in lower light — for the deepest red tones, give it as much bright indirect light as the space allows without scorching the leaves.

The leaves are thick, fleshy, and glossy rather than fuzzy, arranged closely around the base of the plant in this young starter form. Like many red-flushing Hoya, new growth tends to emerge in its most saturated burgundy tones before settling toward a more olive-green cast as each leaf matures and hardens off — the mix of colors visible on a single plant is a normal part of this developmental progression rather than a sign of stress.

As with most sp. Borneo Hoya in cultivation, this plant hasn't yet been matched to a formally described species — it's grown and sold under its collection locality and color while its identity works through the slower process of botanical classification. For collectors, that undetermined status is part of the appeal: a genuinely rare find with striking, ever-shifting foliage color.
