Description
Hoya Scortechinii
Hoya Scortechinii was described in 1908 by King and Gamble, named for Italian missionary and botanist Benedetto Scortechini, who collected extensively in Peninsular Malaysia. It ranges naturally from Thailand through western Malesia and grows as a vigorous climbing or scrambling epiphyte, reaching 2–3 meters given support.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Give it something to climb — this species covers a trellis or pole readily and is considered one of the tougher, more forgiving Hoya for a beginner collector.
The foliage is thick, ovate-lanceolate, and leathery, typically 3–5 cm long, with fine venation. Umbels of 5–20 pale yellow to pinkish flowers appear on stable, mature plants — unscented but neat, with reflexed lobes. Bright indirect light, a loose bark-and-perlite mix, and watering only once the top of the substrate dries keep it healthy and reliably covering whatever support it's given.
For collectors who want a genuinely named, historically documented Hoya species without the fussiness of some rarer Bornean finds, this is a practical, steady grower — proof that "collector" and "easy-care" aren't mutually exclusive within the genus.
