Description
Hoya Rintzii
Hoya Rintzii was described in 2014 by Rodda, Simonsson, and S. Rahayu as part of a taxonomic revision of the Hoya mindorensis complex, and is named for R.E. Rintz, a Hoya researcher who worked extensively in Peninsular Malaysia. It's native to Sumatra, Kalimantan, and wider western Malesia, growing as a lowland species in tree canopy along rivers.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Recreate its riverside canopy habitat with bright, filtered light — bright enough to cast soft shadows — rather than harsh direct sun, and allow it to dry out between waterings.
This species sits in the same closely related complex as Hoya mindorensis and Hoya elmeri, but stands out for its considerably larger leaves, splashed with silver and pink over green. Its flower ball, or umbel, is smaller and less densely packed than its mindorensis-complex relatives, though no less eye-catching. Give it a well-draining epiphyte mix and warm, stable temperatures reflecting its lowland origin.
As part of a genuinely well-studied taxonomic revision spanning Sumatra, Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia, and the Philippines, Hoya Rintzii offers collectors a documented, named entry into one of the more scientifically scrutinized species groups in the entire genus.
