Description

Hoya Parvifolia

Hoya Parvifolia was discovered by Schlechter growing on trees near Danau Kotta in the Indragiri district of Sumatra in June 1901, and described in 1908. Its name is simply descriptive: parvi ("small") and folia ("leaves"). True to that name, this is a compact, shrub-like species with small, oval, grey-green leaves — densely short-haired, giving them a velvety texture — each only about 2 cm long and 1 cm wide.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: Keep this species on the dry side — its shallow, flat-lying roots rot quickly if overwatered, and it prefers a small pot since the root system stays naturally compact.

Despite its diminutive foliage, the flowers are surprisingly substantial for the plant's size — about 8–9 mm across, yellow-green with a yellow corona tinged delicate red, produced 3 to 10 per loose umbel. Unscented, but the color and form recall the well-known Hoya lacunosa. Growth is slow and only lightly branching; give it a sandy, fast-draining mix and don't be tempted to size up the pot too quickly.

Not to be confused with the similarly-named Hoya parviflora ("small flowers") or Hoya pauciflora ("few flowers") — two entirely different species — Hoya Parvifolia is a genuinely distinctive miniature grower, closer in overall look to a Dischidia than to a typical vining Hoya.
