Description
Hoya Finlaysonii
Hoya Finlaysonii was described by Wight in 1834, honoring Scottish naturalist George Finlayson, one of the plant's early collectors on Penang Island. It ranges from southern Thailand through western Malesia — Malaysia and Indonesia — growing as a climbing epiphyte along rivers and streams at forest edges, and is grown chiefly for its foliage.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Full sun to partial shade brings out the best in both foliage and flowering — this species tolerates considerably brighter light than many other Hoya.
Thick, leathery, elliptic leaves up to 21 cm long carry bold, dark green venation across a lighter background — the plant's main visual signature. Small, fragrant umbels of up to 40 reflexed flowers appear from spring through summer, with a creamy to bone-white corolla marked maroon or brown at the tips, each bloom lasting only a few days. Give it well-draining soil, generous light, and allow it to dry out between waterings; this is one of the easier-flowering foliage Hoya, often blooming throughout the year given enough light.
A genus favorite for combining striking, patterned foliage with genuinely reliable flowering — a rare combination among the more foliage-focused Hoya.
