Description

Hoya Buntokensis

Hoya Buntokensis was described by S. Rahayu and Rodda from heath forest in Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo, and named for the locality of Buntok. It's a close relative of Hoya undulata, sharing the same rotate corolla shape and hooked corona lobe appendages, but distinguished by flatter (non-wavy) leaf margins where H. undulata's are distinctly undulate.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: Like its close relative H. undulata, this species is a myrmecophyte in the wild — treat it as a slow, deliberate grower rather than expecting rapid coverage, and keep humidity consistently high.

This species is also myrmecophytic, developing specialized leaf structures capable of housing ant colonies in its native heath forest — a trait it shares with only a small number of Hoya worldwide. Give it bright indirect light, a well-draining epiphyte mix, and even moisture without waterlogging to keep it healthy.

As one of the more recently described members of a small cluster of closely related, ant-associated Bornean Hoya, this species appeals directly to collectors interested in the genus's more unusual ecological adaptations, distinguishing itself from its near-twin H. undulata mainly through careful attention to leaf margin and corona detail.
