Description
Henckelia Amoena
Henckelia Amoena was formerly circulated in the trade as "Labisia sp. Fish Bone" before more accurate identification placed it in Henckelia, a genus in the African violet family (Gesneriaceae) rather than the primrose-relative Labisia. Its trade name references the fishbone-like pattern of its leaf venation, a feature it retains regardless of which genus it's correctly filed under.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: As a Gesneriaceae relative of African violets, this species prefers to dry out somewhat between waterings and dislikes sitting in soggy soil far more than most understory Southeast Asian foliage plants.
Give it bright, indirect light, a light, well-draining mix, and allow the top of the soil to dry before watering again. Henckelia species are found across tropical and subtropical Asia, typically in shaded, humid forest understory habitats similar to those favored by Labisia — which likely explains the original mix-up in trade naming.
A good example of how visually similar understory plants from different families can circulate under a shared trade name before more careful botanical identification sorts them into their correct genus.
