Hapaline celatrix P.C. Boyce

Hapaline Celatrix was described by Peter Boyce and was long considered endemic to Brunei, known from only two collections, before being recorded as a new addition to the flora of Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. It belongs to Hapaline, a genus of just nine species ranging from southern China to Borneo, and the only genus in its tribe (Caladieae) found anywhere in the Old World, everywhere else in that tribe being South American.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: In the wild this genus grows in pockets of humus tucked among limestone or basalt rock — a mineral-rich, humus-heavy mix that still drains well will suit it far better than standard potting soil.

Give it bright indirect light to dappled shade, keep the substrate moist but not saturated, and maintain warm, humid, terrarium-style conditions. Given its extremely limited known collections across just two countries, treat this as a genuine botanical rarity rather than a common trade plant.

A true collector's find — a species known from only a small handful of collections across its entire documented range.
