Description

Cyrtosperma Jhonstoni

Cyrtosperma Johnstonii, sometimes called Ghost Taro or "King of Arums," is native to the Solomon Islands, a close relative of the giant swamp taro (Cyrtosperma merkusii) that shares its huge, starchy rhizomes but is grown mainly as an ornamental rather than a food crop. It's genuinely dramatic: dark green, dagger-shaped, sagittate leaves are traced with luminous pink to reddish-orange veins, most vivid on younger foliage, and the petioles are covered in small, sharp spines — a rugged texture uncommon among aroids.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: The petioles carry small, sharp spines — handle with care when repotting or moving this plant.

Give it dappled sun or bright indirect light, fertile, well-draining, slightly acidic soil (amended with peat moss or pine bark if needed), and keep it consistently moist without letting it become waterlogged. As the plant grows tall with heavy leaves, staking or trellis support may help prevent bending, and a balanced slow-release fertilizer every 2–3 months during the growing season keeps growth strong.

A genuine showstopper for collectors who want scale and drama — this is architectural, jungle-scale foliage with a striking neon vein pattern rarely seen elsewhere in the aroid world.
