Description
Codonoboea Dentata
Codonoboea Dentata was first described by Ridley in 1896 as Didymocarpus dentatus, later passed through the genus Henckelia, and finally settled into its current name by botanist Anton Weber in 2013. It's native to the Lingga Archipelago off Sumatra, Indonesia, and belongs to Codonoboea, the largest genus of herbaceous dicots in Peninsular Malaysia with well over 100 accepted species, all in the African violet family (Gesneriaceae). Its species name — "toothed" — describes the serrated leaf margin typical of the species.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a mature reference specimen; your bare-root plant will typically be smaller.
Care tip: Like most Gesneriaceae, this species dislikes water sitting on its leaves — water the substrate directly rather than misting the foliage, and give it good airflow to prevent fungal spotting.
Give it bright, indirect light, a light, well-draining substrate, and consistent moisture without waterlogging. Codonoboea is confined entirely to primary forest in the wild — never found on limestone or in aquatic habitats — occurring instead on granite, sandstone, and quartz-derived soils and rocks from the lowlands up into the highlands, so a mineral-inclusive, sharply-draining mix suits it well.
A genuine taxonomic survivor — this species has been shuffled through three different genus names over more than a century of study before finally landing in Codonoboea, a group whose "tortured taxonomic history" (in the words of Gesneriaceae specialists) reflects just how actively this corner of Southeast Asian botany continues to be revised.
