Begonia Tuberculosa was described by Girmansyah from Gunung Sinabung in North Sumatra, one of seven new Begonia species documented from Sumatra's mountainous Barisan Range. Its species name refers to the small, roughly 5mm tubercles found on its roots — a genuinely distinctive feature within the genus. It's a creeping herb, rooting at the stem nodes, with soft, variegated, heart-shaped leaves on long, densely grey-white-haired petioles.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Coming from Sumatra's mountainous Barisan Range, this species appreciates slightly cooler, well-ventilated conditions rather than intense lowland heat.
Give it bright, indirect light, a well-draining, humus-rich mix, and consistent moisture without waterlogging. Its creeping, rooting habit at each stem node makes it a good candidate for spreading across terrarium substrate given enough humidity and room to establish.
Currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, this is a relatively recently documented Sumatran species with a genuinely unusual root structure — a good conversation piece for collectors interested in the lesser-known corners of Begonia botany.
