Description
Begonia Bipinnatifida
Begonia Bipinnatifida was described in 1906 by Johannes Jacobus Smith from material collected during Professor Wichmann's expedition into the primeval forest of Mount Horne, in the Papua region of New Guinea. Its name — from the Latin for "twice pinnate" — describes its most distinctive feature: deeply divided, fern-like leaves where each division is itself further divided, giving the whole leaf an intricate, lacy appearance quite unlike the rounded leaves typical of most Begonia.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This species is genuinely demanding — it wants high humidity and a constant temperature of at least 77°F (25°C), which usually means a heated terrarium rather than open-room growing.
Growing as a shrub-like plant with erect, branching, deep red stems, it stays fairly compact at 10–12 inches tall. It flowers infrequently, with tiny blooms carrying five unequal pink tepals. Give it consistent warmth, high humidity, and a well-draining, humus-rich mix, avoiding any cold drafts or temperature swings that can quickly stress the plant.
With foliage that looks more like a fern than a Begonia, this New Guinea species is a genuine conversation piece for collectors who want something that visibly breaks the mold of typical Begonia leaf shape.
