Ardisia Odontophylla was described by Lindley and belongs to Ardisia, a genus of flowering shrubs in the primrose family (Primulaceae) with over 700 accepted species distributed across the Americas, Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands, mainly in the tropics. Its species name, "toothed leaf," describes the serrated leaf margin distinguishing it from smoother-leaved relatives.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: This species belongs to Ardisia's subgenus Odontophylla, a group only recently recognized as taxonomically distinct within the wider genus based on molecular studies.

Give it bright, filtered light, consistently moist, well-draining soil, and warm, humid conditions reflecting its streamside forest habitat. Small white, five-petaled flowers appear given the right conditions, followed by small black berries.

Ardisia as a genus is also botanically notable for an unusual trait: many species host symbiotic bacteria (Burkholderia) in specialized leaf nodules, a genuine curiosity within the plant kingdom that continues to be studied by researchers today.
