Zig Zag Rainbow
Zig Zag Rainbow (Glossolepis dorityi) is a rare and striking species from West Papua. The common name references the distinctive zig-zag or chevron-like scale pattern visible along the flanks — created by the alternating light and dark edging of each scale row. Males develop a warm orange-red body tone with this scale patterning creating a vivid, almost woven textile effect.
Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms to develop the best male coloration. Crush flakes for juveniles; soak pellets.
Native to the Tami River drainage in West Papua, Indonesia. As with most Glossolepis species, adult males develop the most spectacular coloration while females remain considerably plainer. Slightly hard, alkaline water suits this species best.
Keep in groups of at least six with mixed sexes. Completely peaceful with other medium to large community fish. Its rarity in the trade makes it a genuine collector's fish worth showcasing in a well-planned rainbowfish setup.
A well-planted aquarium with open swimming space in the center replicates the rainbowfish's natural riverine habitat. These are active, fast-swimming fish that appreciate length more than height — a longer tank allows them to build up speed and display properly. Good filtration and regular partial water changes are important, as rainbowfish are sensitive to deteriorating water quality. Avoid very small or slow-moving tankmates that may be outcompeted at feeding time.
