Red Tinged Barb
Red Tinged Barb (Dawkinsia rubrotinctus) is an attractive and less commonly available member of the Dawkinsia genus from India. The species name rubrotinctus means 'red-tinged' — describing the warm reddish suffusion across the body and fins that gives this fish its characteristic warm glow, particularly in well-conditioned males.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets and Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms or Hikari Vibra Bites to enhance the warm red tones. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
Native to rivers of the Western Ghats in India. Inhabits clear, moderately flowing streams. The warm reddish body tones are most vivid in fish kept in excellent water conditions. A medium to large barb that needs adequate space.
Keep in groups of at least six. Peaceful and suitable for community aquariums with other moderately sized, non-aggressive species. A tank of at least 3 feet provides adequate swimming space.
Egg-scatterer. An attractive and underappreciated Dawkinsia — its warm reddish tones and active schooling behavior make it a rewarding fish for aquarists who enjoy the Indian barb group.
