Lake Wanam Rainbow
Lake Wanam Rainbow (Glossolepis wanamensis) is one of the most conservation-critical rainbowfish in the hobby. Critically Endangered and endemic exclusively to Lake Wanam — a small, remote lake in Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea — this species exists in very limited numbers in the wild. Males develop a vivid orange-red body with strong iridescence. Every captive-bred specimen is genuinely important for the survival of this species.
Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms. Crush flakes for juveniles; soak pellets. High-quality varied feeding supports the development of the vibrant male coloration.
Native exclusively to Lake Wanam, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea — one of the most restricted ranges of any rainbowfish. The IUCN lists it as Critically Endangered. Habitat in Lake Wanam has been significantly impacted by introduced species. Aquarium populations are the primary conservation hope for this species.
Keep in groups of at least six with mixed sexes. Completely peaceful. This fish is a conservation fish as much as an ornamental one — responsible breeding by aquarists is genuinely meaningful for the species' long-term survival.
A well-planted aquarium with open swimming space in the center replicates the rainbowfish's natural riverine habitat. These are active, fast-swimming fish that appreciate length more than height — a longer tank allows them to build up speed and display properly. Good filtration and regular partial water changes are important, as rainbowfish are sensitive to deteriorating water quality. Avoid very small or slow-moving tankmates that may be outcompeted at feeding time.
