Eight Banded False Barb
Eight Banded False Barb (Eirmotus octozona) is a fascinating fish that, despite its common name and superficial appearance, is not actually a barb at all — it belongs to the family Cyprinidae but in its own distinct genus and tribe, making it more of a 'barb-like cyprinid' than a true barb. The name 'false barb' acknowledges this distinction. It displays a pale body crossed by eight clearly defined dark vertical bars — a clean, graphic pattern that reads beautifully in a planted aquarium.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets (soak briefly) and Sera Vipan Baby make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp or Hikari Vibra Bites. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
Native to slow-moving, heavily vegetated streams and swamp forests of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo — blackwater habitat with soft, slightly acidic, tannin-stained water. Indian almond leaves, dark substrate, and tannin additions from driftwood produce the most vivid and relaxed fish.
Keep in groups of at least six. Peaceful and timid — best kept with other small, quiet species. Avoid active or boisterous tankmates that will outcompete it for food and cause stress.
Egg-scatterer. The Eight Banded False Barb is a genuinely unusual fish for aquarists who appreciate taxonomic curiosity alongside visual appeal. Its distinct evolutionary lineage and clean eight-bar pattern make it a rewarding find for collectors of unusual Southeast Asian cyprinids.
