Bleher’s Rainbow
Bleher’s Rainbow (Chilatherina bleheri) is a large, spectacular rainbowfish named for legendary fish explorer and author Heiko Bleher. Males develop a body that shimmers with blue-green iridescence along the upper flanks and a vivid red-orange lower body and fins — a bold, saturated color combination that makes this one of the most impressive of the Chilatherina species.
Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms. Crush flakes for juveniles; soak pellets.
Native to the Mamberamo River system in West Papua, Indonesia. Chilatherina species inhabit clear, fast-flowing rivers and streams — they appreciate good water movement and high oxygenation in the aquarium. A larger tank with a good external filter provides the conditions this active species needs.
Keep in groups of at least six with mixed sexes. Males display actively and their coloration intensifies dramatically during competition. Needs a larger tank — at least 4 feet in length for a proper school. Completely peaceful with other large community fish.
A well-planted aquarium with open swimming space in the center replicates the rainbowfish's natural riverine habitat. These are active, fast-swimming fish that appreciate length more than height — a longer tank allows them to build up speed and display properly. Good filtration and regular partial water changes are important, as rainbowfish are sensitive to deteriorating water quality. Avoid very small or slow-moving tankmates that may be outcompeted at feeding time.
