White Fin Ornatus
White Fin Ornatus
White Fin Ornatus (Hyphessobrycon ornatus) is a stunning and underappreciated tetra — the deep, laterally compressed body carries a warm pinkish-bronze iridescence, and the fins are dramatically enlarged and edged in brilliant white, particularly the dorsal fin of males which develops into an impressive flowing extension. The white fin edging against the warm body creates an elegant two-tone effect unlike most tetras.
Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms, Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp, or Hikari Vibra Bites. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
Native to the Amazon basin in Brazil and Suriname — slow-moving streams and river tributaries with soft, slightly acidic water. A moderately robust tetra more adaptable to varied water conditions than many soft-water specialists.
Keep in groups of at least 6. Males develop longer dorsal fins and display to each other with fin-spreading behavior. Compatible with all peaceful community fish. The white fin edging is most vivid in well-conditioned fish fed a varied diet.
One of the most elegant mid-sized tetras — the white-edged fins create a halo effect around the warm body that is particularly striking in a planted aquarium. An excellent choice for aquarists wanting something beyond the standard small tetras.
