Description

Blue Rabbit Snail

Blue Rabbit Snail (Tylomelania towutensis) displays a distinctive blue-grey to slate-blue shell coloration with a dark body — one of the most unusual and sought-after Rabbit Snail color forms, the cool blue shell standing out dramatically. Rabbit Snails are among the most visually distinctive and behaviorally interesting freshwater snails available — their elongated spiral shells, rabbit-like facial tentacles, and constant gentle grazing activity make them a standout addition to any appropriate aquarium.

⚠ Water Parameters: Rabbit Snails require warm, hard, alkaline water — pH 7.5–8.5, GH 12+ dGH, temperature 76–84°F. This is significantly different from standard community tank parameters. Soft, neutral, or cool water will shorten their lifespan considerably. A dedicated Sulawesi-parameter setup or a community tank with naturally hard water is required for long-term success.
⚠ Copper Warning: Copper is fatal to all snails — even trace amounts. Never use copper-based medications or treatments in any aquarium housing snails. Check the ingredients of any fish medication before adding it to a snail tank. If in doubt, move snails to a separate container before treating.

All Rabbit Snails belong to the genus Tylomelania and are endemic to the ancient lakes of Sulawesi, Indonesia — Lake Poso, Lake Matano, and surrounding lake systems. These are old, stable, clear-water lakes with hard, alkaline chemistry quite different from the soft acidic blackwater of most Southeast Asian fish habitats. Rabbit Snails are increasingly popular in aquascaping and invertebrate-focused aquariums for their unusual appearance and gentle, constantly active behavior.

The 'rabbit face' — long, fleshy tentacles flanking the mouth — gives these snails a distinctly mammalian facial quality that endears them immediately to most keepers. They are slow, deliberate movers that spend their time grazing the substrate and glass surface. Rabbit Snails are livebearers — they give birth to one fully-formed miniature snail at a time. Population growth is extremely slow and these snails will never overrun a tank.

Feeding & Care Tip: Rabbit Snails are active but slow grazers that need supplemental feeding — they cannot forage enough from tank algae alone. Glasgarten Snail Dinner is the ideal primary food. Supplement with Hikari Sinking Wafers, Hikari Mini Algae Wafers, and blanched vegetables. Glasgarten Mineral Junkie Treats and Glasgarten Mineral Treats are particularly important for Rabbit Snails — their hard alkaline water chemistry helps shell health, but mineral supplementation ensures they have everything they need.
