Description

Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula)

The Venus Flytrap is the most famous carnivorous plant in the world — and for good reason. Its hinged, spined traps snap shut on insects that brush their trigger hairs, then slowly digest the prey for nutrients its boggy native soil can't provide. Native to a tiny region of the Carolinas, it's an endlessly fascinating, genuinely moving plant that's as rewarding to grow as it is to watch.

The One Rule That Matters Most — water: Carnivorous plants evolved in nutrient-poor bogs and are extremely sensitive to the minerals in tap water, which will slowly kill them. Use only distilled, reverse-osmosis (RO), or collected rainwater, and keep the soil mineral-free (peat/sphagnum-based, never regular potting mix or fertilizer).

Care Basics: Flytraps want lots of light — a bright, sunny windowsill or a grow light, several hours of direct sun a day; weak light gives floppy, all-green traps. Keep the soil constantly damp by sitting the pot in a tray of RO/distilled water. And don't "play" with the traps — each trap only closes a limited number of times before it dies, so let it catch its own food (it needs no feeding indoors if it catches the occasional bug).

About Dormancy: This is a temperate plant that needs a real winter rest. From late fall through winter it will die back and look half-dead — that's normal and necessary. Give it a cool spell (a windowsill in an unheated room, a garage, or outdoors in mild winters) and it returns vigorously in spring. A flytrap that never gets dormancy will weaken over a couple of years.

It's an awe-inspiring plant and a fantastic gateway into the carnivorous world — just remember: bright light, pure water, and a winter nap.
