Sera Super Carbon is a high-grade activated carbon for chemical filtration. Its highly porous structure rapidly adsorbs dissolved organics, discoloration, odors, and impurities, polishing the water to a clear, fresh state. Sera's carbon is low in dust and selected to be effective without leaching phosphate back into the tank.
Good to Know: Activated carbon is the standard way to remove medication from the water after a treatment course, and a great tool for clearing tannins (the tea-colored tint from new driftwood) or stubborn odors. It exhausts over time as its pores fill, so it's replaced periodically rather than rinsed and reused indefinitely.
A Note for Planted Tanks: Many aquascapers run carbon only occasionally rather than constantly, since it can adsorb some trace fertilizers along with the impurities. Use it as a targeted tool — for clarity, tannin, or medication removal — rather than a permanent fixture in a fertilized tank.
How to Use: Rinse before use, place in the flow path after mechanical media (a media bag helps), and replace roughly monthly or once water clarity stops improving.
