Sera Catappa Leaves
Sera Catappa Leaves come from the Indian almond tree (Terminalia catappa) and are the classic blackwater botanical for bettas, shrimp, and other soft-water species. As they steep in the aquarium they release tannins and other organic compounds that gently lower pH and tint the water, recreating the leaf-littered, acidic habitats these fish come from. As the leaves slowly decay, beneficial micro-organisms grow on their surface β a natural food source for shrimp, snails, and newly-hatched fish.
Good to Know: Catappa (Indian almond) leaves are a staple of betta and shrimp keeping β the tannins have mild natural antibacterial/antifungal properties many keepers value for fin and overall health, and the biofilm that develops feeds a shrimp colony and fry. They're also a centerpiece of the blackwater aesthetic. Available in Small, Medium, and XXL leaves.
How to Use: Add a leaf or two per ~10 gallons (rinse first; they'll sink once waterlogged, or weight them down). Leave them to break down and replace as needed. Expect a gentle tea-colored tint.
