Sera Alder Cones are small natural botanicals — the seed cones of the alder tree — that recreate the soft, tannin-rich blackwater conditions many fish and shrimp evolved in. Added to an aquarium, they slowly release tannins and humic substances that gently lower pH and tint the water a natural tea color, while their mild natural antibacterial and antifungal properties make them a favorite of shrimp and betta keepers. This is the 50-count pack.
Good to Know: Alder cones are especially prized in shrimp tanks — the surfaces grow the biofilm that ornamental shrimp (Neocaridina like cherries, and Caridina like crystals and Taiwan bees) graze on, the tannins support invert health and gentle water conditioning, and many breeders consider them almost essential for shrimp wellbeing and color. They're also great in betta and blackwater community tanks. A little goes a long way; the cones can be left in to break down slowly.
How to Use: Add a few cones per ~10 gallons (rinse first; boiling briefly helps them sink). Replace as they break down. Expect a natural tea-colored tint that many aquascapers love.
