Seachem Discus Buffer is a phosphate-based buffer made to recreate the warm, soft, acidic water of the Amazon that discus — and many other soft-water tropicals like wild bettas, tetras, and certain shrimp — thrive in. It lowers pH into the acidic range and softens the water by precipitating calcium and magnesium, giving you the strong, stable buffering a phosphate system provides.
Good to Know: Like Neutral Regulator, this is a phosphate buffer, so it's aimed at species/biotope tanks rather than planted aquascapes (where phosphate can drive algae). It can be combined with Neutral Regulator and a ratio chart to target a precise acidic pH, and Seachem suggests pairing it with a trace supplement like Discus Trace to replace the minerals the buffer precipitates out.
It's the targeted tool for keepers dedicated to soft-water, low-pH species who want to dial their water in to the conditions those fish evolved for.
Dosing Guidelines: Use 1 level teaspoon (5 g) per 10–20 gallons daily until the intended pH is reached; thereafter, monthly or at water changes to maintain. The chart assumes unbuffered RO/DI water — if your water is already buffered, use it as a starting point. Pair with Neutral Regulator to target an exact pH.
