The sensor changes color (yellow → green → blue) according to the ammonia level, so a glance tells you instantly whether things are safe, and it gives you early warning of a spike before your fish ever show signs of stress. No tubes, no reagents, no procedure — and a single unit lasts over a year.
It's a brilliant companion to a liquid test kit: the test kit gives you a precise number when you want one, while the Alert sits in the tank and watches around the clock for the moments between tests — exactly when a heater failure, a dead fish, or an overfeeding can send ammonia climbing unnoticed.
Good to Know — free vs. total ammonia: The Alert reads only free ammonia, which is the genuinely toxic form, whereas bottle tests read total ammonia. This is its hidden superpower: because conditioners like Prime detoxify ammonia, a liquid test can show "ammonia present" while your fish are perfectly safe — the Alert cuts through that confusion by showing only the dangerous fraction. (Note: it's not recommended for acidic, below-7.0 water, where free ammonia essentially can't exist.)
How to Use: Peel and place the sensor on the inside glass in a visible spot, and simply read its color against the printed key. Allow a few days for a new sensor to equilibrate. Keep it clean by wiping algae with a soft cloth only — never touch the sensor pad with your fingers or use soap/bleach, and remove it when dosing colored medications.
