Pitcher Plant
This Pitcher Plant is a carnivorous bog plant that lures, traps, and digests insects in its striking tubular "pitchers" — vase-like leaves that fill with digestive fluid. Insects are drawn to the rim by nectar and color, slip on the waxy edge, and tumble in. It's a fascinating, sculptural plant that doubles as a natural pest-catcher, and a wonderful centerpiece for a sunny windowsill, bog garden, or terrarium.
The One Rule That Matters Most — water: Carnivorous plants evolved in nutrient-poor bogs and are extremely sensitive to the minerals in tap water, which will slowly kill them. Use only distilled, reverse-osmosis (RO), or collected rainwater, and keep the soil mineral-free (a peat/sphagnum mix, never regular potting soil or fertilizer).
Care Basics: Pitcher plants want bright light — lots of sun encourages bigger, more colorful pitchers — and constantly damp, mineral-free soil; standing the pot in a tray of RO or distilled water works well. They catch their own food, so there's no need to feed them insects, and you should never fertilize them through the soil.
Depending on the type, temperate (North American Sarracenia) pitcher plants want a cool winter dormancy, while tropical types prefer year-round warmth and humidity — ask us which this one is and we'll point you to the right care.
A dramatic, rewarding carnivorous plant and a living insect trap — bright light and pure water are the whole secret.
