Description
Mopani Wood
Mopani Wood is a dense, heavy African hardwood driftwood prized for its distinctive two-tone look — a light sandy tan on one side and a deep rich brown on the other, often with beautifully sculpted, sandblasted contours. Because it's so dense, it sinks more readily than many woods and lasts for years, making it a durable, characterful centerpiece for aquascapes. Available in Small, Medium, and Large.
Good to Know: Mopani is a favorite for its sculptural shapes and longevity, and it suits everything from community tanks to cichlid and pleco setups. It does release tannins fairly strongly at first (that natural tea tint), which blackwater fish and shrimp appreciate — soak it well first if you prefer clearer water. It's also an excellent surface for attaching moss and epiphytes.
Preparation: New driftwood leaches tannins that tint the water a natural tea color (harmless, and many aquascapers love the blackwater look). To reduce it, soak the wood for a few days to a couple of weeks, changing the water, before adding it. Most woods need weighting or anchoring until waterlogged enough to sink.
Each piece is natural and one-of-a-kind, so size, shape, and color vary — part of the appeal when building a unique scape.
