Celebes Halfbeak (Nomorhamphus liemi) is the standard color form — males display the characteristic Nomorhamphus liemi pattern with vivid fin coloration and the distinctive elongated lower jaw. A striking and unusual livebearer from Sulawesi. Celebes Halfbeaks are one of the most unusual livebearers in the hobby — surface-dwelling insectivores from Sulawesi with a distinctive elongated lower jaw, an unknown fleshy jaw lobe in adults, and care requirements quite different from guppies and mollies.

Feeding & Care Tip: Halfbeaks are obligate surface feeders — all food must be offered at or near the water surface. Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp and Hikari Frozen Daphnia are excellent daily staples. Supplement with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms (floating or offered at surface). Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily. Food that sinks before they reach it will be ignored — use floating or slow-sinking foods only.

Native to fast-flowing freshwater streams and creeks on the island of Sulawesi (formerly Celebes), Indonesia — the 'Celebes' name in most halfbeak common names reflects this origin. Nomorhamphus liemi inhabits the southern half of Sulawesi, living in shallow, clear running water where they feed on insects falling or resting on the water surface. The island of Sulawesi hosts one of the most unique freshwater fish faunas in the world, and halfbeaks are one of its most distinctive groups.

The elongated lower jaw — the 'beak' that gives the family its name — evolved for snatching insects from the water surface and nearby vegetation. Adult males develop a distinctive fleshy black lobe that curves downward from the end of the lower jaw; the function of this lobe is unknown. Males also possess an andropodium — a modified anal fin used for internal fertilization, making halfbeaks true livebearers. Halfbeaks are expert jumpers — a tight-fitting lid is essential. They are also skittish fish that may injure their delicate jaws on glass if startled by sudden movement.

Keep in groups with more females than males — 1 male to 2–3 females reduces male competition. Surface cover from floating plants such as water lettuce or frogbit is strongly beneficial, making the fish feel secure and providing shade that halfbeaks prefer. Compatible with peaceful mid-water and bottom species that will not compete for the surface zone.
