Description

Cape Sundew (Drosera capensis)

The Cape Sundew is widely considered the perfect beginner carnivorous plant — one of the prettiest and most forgiving of them all. Its slender leaves are covered in glistening, dew-tipped tentacles that trap insects, then slowly curl around the prey in a slow-motion embrace. Those sparkling "dew" droplets (actually sticky digestive mucilage) make it a beautiful, ever-active plant, and it catches fungus gnats and fruit flies with relish.

The One Rule That Matters Most — water: Carnivorous plants evolved in nutrient-poor bogs and are extremely sensitive to the minerals in tap water, which will slowly kill them. Use only distilled, reverse-osmosis (RO), or collected rainwater, and keep the soil mineral-free (peat/sphagnum-based, never regular potting mix or fertilizer).

Why It's Great for Beginners: Unlike the Venus flytrap, the Cape sundew grows year-round with no required winter dormancy, so it stays attractive through the seasons. It's adaptable, fast-growing, and tolerant — give it bright light (a sunny windowsill or grow light) and keep it sitting in a tray of RO or distilled water, and it largely takes care of itself. It also grows readily from the seed it produces (sometimes a little too readily!).

If the dew ever disappears after shipping or a move, don't worry — give it good light and a few days and the sparkling droplets return.

A genuinely easy, genuinely gorgeous introduction to carnivorous plants — and a tireless little gnat-catcher.
