Bucephalandra Variegated
Bucephalandra Variegated
Bucephalandra Variegated is a rare mutation that produces leaves decorated with distinct creamy or light marbled patches against a green base — a naturally occurring variegation that makes every plant a unique, one-of-a-kind specimen. The unpredictable, organic quality of the marbling gives this plant an artistic, painterly character that is impossible to replicate artificially and deeply appealing to collectors and aquascapers who value botanical individuality.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra Variegated can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
Like all Bucephalandra from Indonesia, Variegated can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to hardscape at any position in the aquarium. The rhizome must never be fully buried. This variety particularly appreciates moderate to strong water flow, which mirrors the fast-flowing streams where Bucephalandra naturally thrive. It can also produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.
This compact variety reaches 2 to 4 inches in height and grows well in low to moderate lighting. CO₂ supplementation is not required but will support steadier growth. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 provide ideal conditions. Liquid fertilization with micronutrients supports the health and vibrancy of the variegated leaf patterning.
In the aquascape, Bucephalandra Variegated is most effective as a focal accent placed on prominent hardscape where its cream and green marbling can be clearly seen. The light-colored patches on the leaves create natural visual contrast against darker plants, stone, and wood. In nano tanks it serves as an immediate centerpiece; in larger layouts it adds a refined, collector-quality accent that elevates the entire composition.
Bucephalandra Variegated is a true rarity — a plant whose natural mutation produces beauty that no cultivar selection can fully replicate. For those who appreciate the extraordinary in the aquarium hobby, it is an exceptional treasure.
