Bucephalandra hades
Bucephalandra hades
Bucephalandra hades takes its underworld name from the dramatic darkness of its leaves — velvety, deep-colored foliage that develops stunning blue, purple, or metallic sheens that shift and change with the angle of light. This combination of near-black depth and iridescent color creates a plant of extraordinary visual drama, one of the darkest and most atmospheric Bucephalandra varieties available.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra hades can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
As a Bornean species from Indonesia, hades can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to driftwood or stone at any height in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. It benefits from medium lighting to bring out the full expression of the blue, purple, and metallic sheens. CO₂ supplementation is optional. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0 reflect the specific water chemistry preferences of this variety. Like all Bucephalandra, it can produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.
Hades grows to 2 to 4 inches and requires consistent conditions for the best color expression. Liquid fertilization supports the health of the dark, iridescent leaves. Changes in lighting and CO₂ levels can noticeably influence the intensity of the blue and purple tones.
In the aquascape, Bucephalandra hades is most powerful as a featured foreground or midground accent on dark stone or textured driftwood where its near-black leaves and metallic shimmer create maximum visual impact. The dark tones contrast beautifully with bright green mosses and pale substrate. In minimalist or dark-themed aquascapes, hades is an obvious and inspired choice.
Bucephalandra hades is a plant of genuine theatrical beauty — dark, iridescent, and unforgettable in any planted aquarium that gives it the stage it deserves.
